Miers Withdraws

What can I say.... I am not shocked that she withdrew. I liked Harriet Miers and I trust the President's choices, however, I like how the conservatives have held a flame under GWB's butt about this nomination!

I have utmost respect for GWB, he is a man of true conviction, he is moral and he does what he thinks is right, and doesn't care one bit what anyone else thinks about it - especially the liberals! I know that his approval ratings are down, and he is dealing with other problems but this is NO time to give into the liberals just because he wants things to run as smoothly as possible. We knew when we re-elected him that we would have to replace 2 Supreme Court Justices, and many conservatives feel let down by his choices. It isn't that Roberts and Miers aren't qualified. It is the fact that neither Roberts or Miers have a record to back them up, and Republican's have been let down TOO many times by President's and their "trust me" nominations.

I think this is a good thing for our party! Republicans have been a solid party because we don't waiver on the issues. If you are a Republican, people know where you stand (for the most part). This will send a STRONG message to the Candidate in 2008: We are not going to elect someone who is not a strong conservative and who is not willing to back the conservative platform and his voters!

Any new ideas on 2008 candidates?

I really don't see how you can argue that Miers was qualified for the Supreme Court. Almost all of the conservative criticism of Miers was based on the fact that she lacked the qualifications and credentials that is expected in a Supreme Court nominee. I mean... get real.

I am sure that is part of the arguments against her... but there have been MANY Supreme Court Justices that were not judges before they were nominated. Rehnquist for example was never a judge before his position on the Supreme Court.

I don't think that her qualifications (or lack of) are the basis of the conservative arguments. I think the conservatives are mad because GWB ran on a solid conservative platform and when it came time to making 2 of the most important decisions in his Presidency, he is trying to make it "easy" and please the liberals. That is what most conservatives are really upset about.

I am not saying that people aren't upset that she has never been a judge before... so please don't post quotes or articles about it. I understand your point... but the underlying argument goes much deeper then just mere qualifications.

I'm happy that she has withdrawn her name from the nomination process, however, I also feel like Bush kind of rolled over to special interest groups, and some elitist Republicans. I think they should have gone through the process and hearings and then decided whether or not to withdraw her name...

I wasn't happy with her nomination to begin with, but the way she has been withdrawn isn't exactly satisfying either.

You're throwing up the same red herring that has already been shot to pieces by conservative academics. The criticism of Miers was not based on the fact that she never served as a judge, but rather was based on the fact that she lacked any of the qualifications which people have come to expect in Supreme Court judges.

I actually like her... But if the President and/or Miers felt it best that she withdraw then why continue the process and make her go through all of that when they could just end it all now.

I don't think GWB just rolled over to the elitist. There was a HUGE base of the grass roots that were really upset with his decision and I think he knew that.

I am just wondering who the next Justice will be. At this point both sides are going to be up in arms now... there will no pleasing anyone!

What are those qualifications then TWO? I would think that the biggest one would be that she has never been a judge.

The fact that Miers has never been a judge probably didn't help her bid as a Supreme Court nominee, but as you correctly pointed out, it hardly made her unique.

I don't really have time to explain why Miers was unqualified to serve on the Supreme Court, so I will let George Will do the talking for me...

Miers is the wrong pick

I am about to head out to school... but I will def. read that when I get home!

I never stated that I personaly felt that Miers was qualified... what I stated in my post was that, that wasn't really the main problem. Which of course we disagree on... and maybe I will change my mind after reading your link!

Do you agree that conservatives have the right to be upset with this nomination? I mean, if her lack of qualifications were the real reason that Republicans were so mad, wouldn't liberals be pissed too? I would think that no one would want an unqualified Justice! And imagine if a liberal President appointed someone like her... do you think the liberals would have the right to be upset?

Just curious

Regarding the Democratic party's reaction to the Miers kerfuffle, I would guess that the Democrats felt no need to help the opposition eat their own.

Simply said, "It's time for the fight with the left. Let's get it on!" Stick together and cover GWB's back when he chooses the "right" nominee this time.

who would win in a fight, Carl Winslow or Phillip Banks?

Winslow, Banks is too hefty to do any damage.

I agree, plus carl has police training...serious fight question...my friends and I have debated this for over 2 years.... Tyson in his prime or Shaq

Now that's a tough one. I am going to have to go with Tyson on that one. Shaq is strong, indeed, but there is no way he could kick someone's ass to a pulp like Tyson could.
