Thoughts About Katrina

First of all, I just want to say that this is a horrible horrible tragedy... and I just hope that things get better soon for everyone involved.

I am having conflicting thoughts about all of this though... I personally believe that we need to help everyone - these people are AMERICANS and human beings and I would hope that there would be someone willing to help me if something tragic ever happened here in Fort Worth. I am volunteering at local shelters here... I want to help out and do what I can. However, there is only so much we can do. Geraldo said it best... "the great state of TEXAS is actually making this tragedy better - they have housed over 200,000 people there and let's be honest... these people are all on welfare and will likely stay there after this is over." This could possibly be a HUGE burden on our economy and job market in the future.

I don't want to turn anyone away but come on - there is only so much we can do here... what are all the BLUE states doing? It seems to me that the RED states are the only ones doing anything here - last time I checked the liberals only argument was that Conservatives only care about themselves while the liberals care about the poor and working class.... if this is the case, why is it that the Republicans are opening their homes and pocket books to help these people while the liberals are doing nothing but complaining that Bush is a racist and politicizing this tragedy? This doesn't make sense to me... then again - nothing liberals say makes sense.... it is ALL TALK. It always has been and it always will be. I just hope that this opens a lot of peoples eyes. Maybe the poor will for once understand that the liberals are full of CRAP!

I am proud of our Texas Government. We implemented a HUGE rescue plan in less then 24 hours to help the people of Louisiana. Texas was organized and ready to take on something like this in an instant, which is more then I can say for Louisiana or the New Orleans Mayor.

People want to blame Bush and the federal government for this, but what about the local governments? I will admit, there were problems with ALL 3 levels of government here - but everything starts at the local level. The mayor knew this was a possibility for a long time and should have been prepared for it. As of right now though, we should be focusing on helping the people that have survived this tragedy and save the politics for later!

Go fuck yourself France! The next time you call America "Stingey" I'll come over there and Bitch Slap every one of you Frog Eating Douche Bags! Go smoke some cigarettes, don't shower or shave, and get taken over by some country. Don't call us, we'll call you!

Also the Mayor of New Orleans sucks huge sweaty balls! He is a fucking PUSSY with a HUGE Capital "P". He ran for cover like a little bitch and then had no idea what to do when shit hit the fan. Typical Democrat! And he had tons of warning to try and put something together and he did nothing but hole himself up in the "W" Hotel with some of his staff while his city flooded and imploded.

I recall there being no warning when two planes crashed into the WTC and I remember seeing that City's mayor in the thick of the chaos calling shots, directing the Fire Dept and Police Dept. He was covered with ash and dust while the towers were collapsing assuring everyone it was going to be okay and to take cover. THAT is a Leader! Some people are born with those skills, others are just Big Ex-Cable Execuvtives that thought it would be cool to run for Mayor.

Also I recall Four huge Hurricanes hitting Florida last year and Gov. Jeb Bush handling all of them. He didn't bitch and whine about the Feds not being there, he just planned ahead and acually did something.

The Gov of LA and the Mayor of New Orleans are as incompetent as they get. I have not seen any of them on TV directing any aid or talking to the thier city or state at all, let alone let the country know how things are going.

Actually I did for the first time see the Mayor of New Orleans on TV yesterday, he was blaming Bush for all the mess and choas! Pretty productive you ignorant FUCK STICK!

SUCK IT UP AND HELP YOUR CITY! PEOPLE ARE DYING!

And there is so much evidence that New Orleans and Lousiana were just toally ignorant in this whole process. Just Seven weeks ago the New Orleans TIMES-PICAYUNE ran a story warning residents: If you stay behind during a big storm, you'll be on your own!

And then yesterday every they called for every official at FEMA to be fired!

It's like they don't realize that what they print is saved at all!

And why is Houston so quickly able to help 75,000 refugees and other cities in LA aren't? And I'm talking about the ones not hit by the hurricane your Liberal Morons! Houston has a disater recovery plan and cots, medical supplies, and food/water ready for situations like this. LA has a disater recovery plan. Why did they not follow it or use it?

I'm just sick of all the finger pointing. Let's help those in need first, Then I'll get back to donkey punching all of you fucking helpless, whiney Hippies!

Why does there have to be a blue "Texas"(AKA: Cali)? I am not saying that a blue state needs to take in 200,000 people like we did... but come on... help us out. Every state has at least 1 big city - fill it up like we have!!

I don't think you can credibly make the argument that it's only people in red states that are helping. Many red states are in closer proximity to the areas devastated by Katrina, so it seems obvious that people leaving Lousiana would go to Texas. However, other states are pitching in. For example, I have read that the mayors of Philadelphia and Baltimore have opened shelters, schools, and hospitals to take in families who are now homeless because of Katrina. I think all Americans, no matter how you label the state in which they live, will do their part.

This shows the fallacy behind the smaller federal government coservatives wish to implement.

A nation MUST have a well-maintained infrastructure. Until proven otherwise, a well-maintained infrastructure does NOT come from tax-cuts.

No one wants to pay taxes; no one likes to pay taxes, but it is a necessary evil.

Would it be nice to have country with no taxes? Sure, but we would have a lot more situations like New Orleans.

The hypocrisy of the Republican Party makes me laugh. They claim they want a smaller government, yet they make the government bigger--not to aide its citizens but to force regressive social policies.

It's time for a government that works for the people--that grows in it's aim to help citizens and shrinks in it's ability to control citizen's lives.

Yeah, but Mthomas, Cali isn't helping at all! If states like California (those that don't border LA) would finance and relocate a portion, say 5 %, then no one state would have to carry the burden of absorbing 200K+ of people. Step up liberal states, step up! They will complain about the lack of compassion in W, but won't put there money where there mouth is! Anti-Lib is right.

Oh and fed up, I almost was not able to post. The Boy Scout Troop #353 sent me over the edge for a while.

I totally agree with Reagan... if some of the closer states would just take a few thousand each, that would make a HUGE difference. They are holding job fairs for the refugee's tomorrow. MOST of them are planning on staying here... I personally don't think one state can handle an influx of 200,000 people over night. Ranting,

That is the "element" I was fearful of. I know poverty and crime are relatives (no blame, just pointing it out.) As Anti-Lib stated we are taking on a large population of welfare dependant people.

I'm not at all thrilled about the character of people who might be coming to Texas.

Its not supposed to be said b/c its not politically correct to talk about people who have gone through a trajedy, but there must be something in the water (no pun intended) to make New Orleaners act the way they did.

What in the hell kind of people kill the cops (the people at this time trying to help) or rape women who are starving and thirsty?

After 911, New Yorkers came together, there were no reports of raping, looting, or shooting cops. And they are supposed to be the obstreperous ones.

In New Orleans all that crap happened (and of course it was W's fault for not predicting people would act like devils). I can understand taking water or food, but what the hell do you need with a DVD player when there is NO FRICKING ELECTRICITY!?!?! Or ten pairs of shoes when you don't have a roof over your head?

If violence in inevitable when closing tens of thousands of people together in a shelter, then all the more reason for every state to finance and take in portions of the poplulations that have moved in droves to a few states like Texas.

And if Cali continues taking in refugees, then my hats off and my mouth is shut.

It just makes me sick - and I'm not meaning to put any sort of racial spin on any of this because I don't think this is, or should be, a racial issue. I think it's sick that people hurt the people who are trying to help them. I hope the worst for this man. May not be politically correct, but I'm not a very politically correct person. I'll say it how it is.

This man assaulted and raped a woman. He was brought over here from Louisiana and was given shelter and food by the State of Texas and then broke the law - he is a violent criminal who should have stayed in Louisiana and drowned. He wasn't raping for food. He wasn't raping for shelter. He was raping because he's a criminal - these are not the people I want in my state.

I just don't see what you are all talking about with Califronia taking people in. How are they supposed to get all the way to freaking California? Texas is right next door. Arkansas is right next door. Mississippi, Alabama, Oklahoma, Tennessee, Georgia. ALL RED STATES.

How the shit are these people supposed to get to the northeast or California? Walk? No shit Texas and the red states are gonna be taking in more people. If this happened in Oregon do you think Texas would be taking in 200,000 people? NO. Because they wouldn't be able to get there very easily. They would all be going to California.

And the fact that Texas is three times the size of any other state physically makes it more logical to go there. There isn't any room in New Jersey to put them. Or Delaware. Or Connecticut. I don't see the point here.

And I would like to see where you get your data from that says that the red states are supporting the victims more financially. It seems like you are just throwing that out there as fact with nothing to back it up. Obviously texas is doing its fair share but what the hell do you expect Vermont to be doing other than offering money?

Is the state of Washington really supposed to be saying "hey exhausted, hot, deathly sick people of New Orleans: why not take a 30 hour ride in a school bus up to Seattle with all of your life possessions stuffed on your lap and no air conditioning?" TEXAS IS RIGHT THERE. This whole point is nonsense.

11:29 AM
Blogger The Anti-Liberali said...

The point is not valid because you don't do anything to help out. You are a typical liberal that expects the conservatives to take care of everything. Blue states COULD and SHOULD take people in. It doesn't matter how far away they are. Take a few thousand in... There are plenty of ways to get the people there quickly - as a matter of fact some of the states are already doing it.

So you are saying that Texas should just take in over a million people because we are next door to LA and because we are a big state?? Ya that makes a ton of sense. You must not live here not understand economics- that is why you don't give a shit...

11:36 AM
Blogger ImMikeJones said...

And also, in NYC (a blue state) during 911, that was a very small section of the city that was directly affected by the buildings going down. If the ENTIRE CITY OF NEW YORK was underwater and pretty much everyone lost their home and had no place to go and no food to eat or water to drink and it was 110 degrees I would imagine it would have been a different story.

This is the whole city we are talking about here. I am not saying that 911 is any more or less of a tragedy. Probably more people dies (although we don't know yet). But I don't recall New Yorkers having to stand outside for six days wading around in 2 feet of shitwater with virtually no food and no drinkable water with babies wearing the same diapers they have had on for a week. And I don't know if any of you have been there in the summer, but New Orleans is fucking HOT.

This is an entirely situation than 911. I agree that Giuliani is a much better leader than the mayor of N.O. but do you really think he would have looked as great covered in shit and piss for a week?

That would strain the shit out of both of those cities. And these aren't exactly middle class wage earners wither. These are well below poverty line people that suckle from the tit of Well-Fare and commit crimes like a fat kid in a candy store. And these people are most likely going to stay put wherever thay are sent.

We can help some people, but not a quarter of a million. And the Airlines are offering some people assistnace.

Sweet argument that "Texas is just right there." That something some ignorant Dumb Fuck would say. I take it you don't have a clue how the world works. How local city and state governments are funded and what unloading 100,000 people into a community would not really help anyone.

Look, I symathize with these people. They got fucked by an act of God. They did not choose their current situation. They need help. So lets step it up and help them and do what's best. Entitlement necessarily diminishes what is actually occuring in this case. I am not helping out at all. My reasons are that I have negative cash flow right now. This doesn't excuse me, but I can live with it. I guess I could resent the fact that you think people like me are not doing our parts, but that is no reason for you to think my state's government should tax me, removing my choice, and force me to contribute. I am not sure that falls under my understanding of the idea of freedom. I am in a red state, Virginia, in a red country, The US, and think that the private charities are fully equiped to resond to these needs. They would be MORE equiped if the government wasn't trying to crowd them out of the effort by raising money through taxes...

The Federal Government was in charge after Bush made a Statement on Federal Emergency Assistance for Louisiana and Governor of Louisiana Declared a State of emergency the same day with aid beginning on August 26, 2005 before the hurricane hit.

SO why did the FEMA director wait to seek Homeland help? Documents: Brown waited five hours after storm’s landfall to get agency aid.

From the Federal Statement Bush Signed before the hurricane and the same day as LA. gov. declared an emergency-
Specifically, FEMA is authorized to identify, mobilize, and provide at its discretion, equipment and resources necessary to alleviate the impacts of the emergency. Debris removal and emergency protective measures, including direct Federal assistance, will be provided at 75 percent Federal funding.

Please keep this in mind as you listen to the Bush Administration try to blame State officials for dropping the ball.
The National Response Plan (NRP) is an all-discipline, all-hazards plan that establishes a single, comprehensive framework for the management of domestic incidents. It provides the structure and mechanisms for the coordination of Federal support to State, local, and tribal incident managers and for exercising direct Federal authorities and responsibilities.

Actually Fed Up, I quite understand how things work. And I don't believe I said anywhere in my post that we should just dump all the people in Texas. I think I mentioned other states such as Arkansas, Tennessee, Alabama, Mississippi, Oklahoma...but the point of the original post on this thread was that blue states weren't doing enough. And I was saying that that makes sense because it happened way the fuck away from any blue states.

Go ahead and use and A-I-R-P-L-A-N-E and ship 235 people at a time to California. I am sure California would take them. But doesn't it seem a bit ridiuclous to fly them all they way there when there are so many closer places for them to be. LIke you said, Kansas, Florida, Nebraska. It doesn't matter to me what color the state is. Just send them where it is easiest for everyone involved. And to me, that isn't California or the northeast.

I don't think Texas should have to deal with all of it. But to place blame on blue states is absurd. They aren't shipping them to blue states as a matter of convenience. Not because they aren't welcome.

We have 2000 sexual predators roaming the streets in Texas. They're stalking public bathrooms and only one has been caught thus far. He was being sheltered by a Plano family, and he assaulted and attempted to rape their 13 year old daughter. Wonderful.

I buy the argument that there is some blame to be passed around here - I don't buy the argument that this is a racial issue. Sure the federal government could have responded faster; should New Orleans and Louisiana have taken more precautions when they knew how vulnerable they were? Of course.

I'm sick of the race card and think it has no relevance here whatsoever. Yes, the majority of the people who were affected in New Orleans were black. Yes, the majority of the people who live in New Orleans are black. It's logical, therefore, that the majority of people affected were black. Enough said.

Neighboring states are carrying this burden. We're happy to help, and I've strained my financial resources as much as possible while still allowing me to eat and live. It is a terrible tragedy, that was caused by a NATURAL DISASTER. Playing the blame game doesn't solve anything - let's just figure out what went wrong, if anything, and deal with it so we don't have another "Katrina-aftermath" situation.

a) where are people going to go? to the neighboring states first. All the neighboring states are red states. What makes more sense, a 3 hour bus ride to Houston or a 22 hour bus ride to NY?

b) we ARE actually housing people here in NY. Both in shelters and in private homes.

c) Firemen, policemen, doctors, even 60 buses and their drivers were all sent from NY. The third largest number of firemen in NO are NYFD.

7:45 AM
Blogger Ranting Republican said...

Sure it makes more sense for people to come to neighboring states, initially. I understand that. BUT, they don't need to stay here for the duration! It just makes more sense to spread the evacuees out a bit more. Texas schools are already overcrowded, and people have a better chance of finding more jobs when they're not highly concentrated in one area.

I do feel for these people, but neighboring states shouldn't be the only ones carrying the burden. That's great you have evacuees in New York and elsewhere - I'm happy to hear it...but I'm guessing you don't have the hundreds of thousands as Texas does.

I feel like I am listening to a broken record with all of this talk of "playing the blame game." This is just the latest scripted talking point which this administration will no doubt repeat ad nauseam as though it is a satisfying answer to the American people. How many times did we have to hear the infuriatingly simplistic line "we're solving problems because we're problems solvers?"

The term "blame game" trivializes the concept of accountability. It is not a game to figure out what went wrong in this situation. It is not a game to figure out how thousands and thousands of people were stranded for a week with no food or water in ten feet of toxic flooding. It is not a game to expect that our government at all levels should be better prepared and able to communicate in times of disaster, especially four years after 9/11. Can someone tell me what the Dept. of Homeland Security has been doing other than implementing a ridiculous yellow, orange, red terror alert system?

I am sick and tired of hearing this stupid "blame game" rhetoric. It is all the more ridiculous when the Bush administration is engaging in finger-pointing of its own. Apparently, for this administration, wanting answers and accountability is a game if we're examining the federal response, but not if the target is local and state governments.

Fast reflexes that enable him to avoid all those potholes while mountain biking so he never falls off his bike.

And fast reflexes that enable him to responsible chew snacks like pretzles with no fear of choking on one and passing out.

And fast reflexes that enable him to sit for more than 7 minutes with a stunned look of supreme idiocy on his face while our nation was coming under the largest attack in its history.

And fast reflexes which prompted him to act in UNDER A WEEK to try to find a way to help the citizens of New Orleans after this tragedy.

Yes Full Auto, thank God he is running things for us.

And this is not "Blame gaming" it. The local and state governments blew it too. But thanking God for Bush's fast reactions is not exactly on point here.

I am just happy they vent their anger in constructive ways, by stealing TVs and DVD players so they can feed their families..I know when a natural disaster hits in Chicago, fuck the water and canned goods, I'm looting Best Buy...I say we keep New Orleans as is, only now we market the city as Waterworld...Open up underwater Hotels and Have submarine adventures past historic sites like the submerged McDonalds...Or the very popular attraction: "Hey Thats where Target used to be". Some see the floods as a disaster...I see it as a gift, how often can you have your very own underwater city?
....by the way I donated money to the relief so that will offset my rude comments I hope

WOW - immikejones - you set your standard REALLY high if those are your idols!

We set the womens movement back? I didn't know that walking around talking like a jackass was part of the women's movement!

I kind of the like the Waterworld idea!

I'm not sure why it matters if the people making the foul-mouthed comments are men or women. I think it sets up a double standard when you LOL at fed up's comments and commend him for cursing, but tell jones that she has no class. This isn't 1950. Women do not have to be demure.

9:57 AM
Blogger Ranting Republican said...

Women absolutely do not HAVE to be demure -

I don't care what you have to say, and am not easily offended, but let's face it...the things she's said is not classy. (I never said the things Fed Up said were classy either - but then again, he never claimed to be classy and mikejones did).

If you claim to be classy, and make these kinds of comments, it is clearly illustrated you do not know the meaning of "classy."

Blogger crossingguard69 said...

Yah I am in a feminism class so I am enlightened...I dont care what broads say, as long as those bitches make my fuckn dinner then Im all for women's rights

10:26 AM
Blogger lilybriscoe said...

I think it all depends on how you define classy. I don't think having a potty mouth necessarily means you are without class. I find Jones' use of the words "pubic hair" and "balls" far less classless than the suggestion (which I guess was intended to be comedic) that we should make New Orleans a Waterworld amusement park. RR: I believe you said you liked that idea.

If being classy to you means mocking a city hit my natural disaster, but not using the word "balls," then I guess our definitions of the term "classy" differ.

10:51 AM
Blogger crossingguard69 said...

It would be "classy" if you could choke on my "pubic hair" and on my "balls".....hows that one work out

Ha ha ha! That is classic! I just hope your balls don't smell.

MT - for real, crossing guard is one of the smartest people I've ever met in my life (and has been one of the smartest since he was around 10)- some of his comments may be "questionable" (sorry kid), but he's damn freaking brilliant. and he's a big guy, so you may not want him to meet you in DC...

9:30 PM
Blogger mthomas1776 said...

No, RR I think you are wrong about that. I have never met a smart ass that I didn't enjoy breaking by laughing at them in person. I think I would take my chances. Isn't the jackass your brother? Hardly an unbiased opinion. "Smartest person I have met." There is no evidence of this statement.

I will have to sleep on it and see if it makes sense in the morning.

And what part of the name Thomas makes you think he is a "towel head?"

Actually CrossingGaurd, I am not Middle Eastern. I am Welsh, Irish, and Cherokee. My Welsh ancestors came here in 1670. My Cherokee ancestors helped fight "the creeks" in Alabama before some of their relatives were death marched to Oklahoma. My white ancestors fought in the Revolution of 1776 and helped establish a country so crackers like you could exercise your ignorance. By the way, my sisters have much more pride in both my athleticism and my intelligence than you could ever muster, I am not impressed by your family's ego masturbation, a little too “deliverance” for me.
